That sounds like brakes, the wear indicator will make a high pitch squeal
when the pads are getting low.

The first sentence of that link says, "

If you hear funny sounds from the rear of the car, and cannot see where the
noise is coming from, you may have a

rear wheel bearing failure like I did."

Can someone please define "funny?" I have a very high pitched squeal that
seems to come from the rear of the car, but only occasionally. It seemed to
start after I had the car up on jack stands for an extended period of time,
so I thought it was suspension related. It hasn't gone away, or gotten
worse in 2 years (but I've probably only put 2000 miles on the car since
then.)

Thanks.

Changing wheel bearings is a very difficult task. Even with a decent set of
tools and a 20 ton press, I'd guess that it'll probably take you on the
order of 10 hours. Do you have the TSRM available? Also, here's a tech
article on the subject:

Subject: [mkiv]Wheel bearing question(s)

My car is a 1996 TT Auto. It has 145k miles on the clock and running strong.
A lot of minor maintenance issues are starting to creep up on me and I need
to start addressing them.

First will be the wheel bearings. I know the back right is gone as of
Monday. What I am curious about is difficulty of changing it myself, price,
and part numbers so I can order from Jeff Watson. I'll probably replace
brake pads while I have it apart as well. So what am I in for? Any tips?

  Thank you,

  Casey
